TL:DR, A good game, but a hard sell to most people at the same time. It has a bit of a Reputation® and it is mostly deserved. I think anyone who likes the genre should give it a try, but also be prepared to throw in the towel halfway. Overall a tough metroidvania with some great level/world design, really nice attention to detail and a commitment to riddles and puzzles, but somewhat brought down by frustrating…

I played this game with a guide and it was still a lot of fun. There is indeed a lot of jank, and the difficulty is in fact very often tied to the jank, but it has its charm much like a game like Zelda 2. I think that even as much as if can frustrate you, La Mulana is a genius and bold game that deserves nothing but my respect. I haven't played much, but was quite enjoying the retro style. The game's not allowing rebinding of the arrow keys has left me unwilling to play so I'll leave a "not recommended" review for those who want to research its downsides before buying.
