Excessively punishing for a general audience -- this game is for hardcore fans of old pencil and paper 90's fantasy games. That being said, the reason why it's a No for me is because of the price. If it was a $15 game, I'd absolutely recommend it. It's a lot of fun - and the punishment is part of the fun. $40 is INSANE though. That's polished AA territory and this isn't that.

I had trouble getting into this, but now that I've got a feel for the game, it's a blast. I've played a lot of Wizardry-likes and old DCRPGs, but I keep coming back to Five Ordeals. Nothing seems to scratch the itch like this game does. Just be patient with it.
