I think you should absolutely buy this game... with a caveat: you should grab the game files (including expansions) and just play it off-steam on a different source port (Ironwail for example). I've played Quake plenty of times outside of Steam, and I considered playing this version for the achievements, but I was immediately put off. The problems with this version are many.
